Why Handmade Knitwear Needs Special Care
A handmade crochet cardigan is not like a machine-made garment. The organic cotton and wool yarns, the hand-stitched construction, and the unique texture all deserve extra attention. Proper care is simple and makes your pieces last for years.
Hand Washing: The Golden Rule
Always hand wash. Machine washing can felt wool, stretch cotton, and distort hand-crocheted garments.
- Fill a basin with cold or lukewarm water (never hot)
- Add a small amount of gentle detergent or baby shampoo
- Submerge and gently press -- do not rub, wring, or twist
- Soak for 10-15 minutes
- Rinse in clean cold water until soap is gone
Drying: Lay Flat, Never Hang
Hanging wet knitwear stretches it permanently.
- Lay flat on a clean towel and reshape while damp
- Roll the towel to press out excess water
- Air dry naturally on a flat surface
- Keep away from direct sunlight and radiators
Storage: Folded, Not Hung
Knitwear should always be stored folded. Hangers create shoulder bumps.
- Fold neatly in a drawer or shelf
- Use cedar blocks or lavender sachets to deter moths
- For long-term storage, use a breathable cotton bag
- Give pieces a seasonal airing
Dealing with Pilling
Pilling is natural with any yarn. To remove:
- Use a fabric shaver or pilling comb gently
- Never pull pills by hand -- this damages yarn
- Pilling reduces after the first few wears
When to Repair
A small hole does not mean the end. Handmade knitwear is easier to repair than machine-made clothing because each stitch is accessible. A crochet hook and matching yarn can close small holes in minutes.
Care Is Part of Slow Fashion
Looking after your cardigan or wool jumper is an act of respect for the artisan who made it. A well-cared-for piece tells a longer, richer story.
