A Tradition Passed Through Generations
In Turkey, crochet and knitting are not just crafts -- they are cultural heritage. For centuries, women have learned these techniques from their mothers and grandmothers, creating intricate lacework, dowry pieces, and garments that carry meaning far beyond their function.
This tradition of oya (needle lace) and hand crochet is woven into the fabric of Turkish domestic life. It is a language of creativity, patience, and community. At Ana Chic, we work with women who carry this tradition forward, applying ancestral techniques to contemporary designs.
Working From Home, On Their Own Terms
Every Ana Chic artisan works from home. This is not a compromise -- it is a deliberate choice that gives each woman control over her schedule, her pace, and her working conditions.
For many of our makers, including refugees who have rebuilt their lives in new cities, home-based work provides income without sacrificing family responsibilities. There are no factory shifts, no commutes, no supervisors watching the clock. There is just a woman, her yarn, and her skill.
Communication happens via WhatsApp -- photos of works in progress, colour consultations, and the occasional voice message celebrating a finished piece.
The Skill Behind the Stitch
A single Ana Chic cardigan takes between 20 and 40 hours to complete. A complex piece with granny square motifs or intricate floral patterns can take even longer. Each stitch is placed by hand, each colour change deliberate, each square assembled with care.
This is not repetitive factory work. It requires concentration, spatial awareness, and creative problem-solving. Our artisans adjust tension, adapt patterns to different yarn weights, and make hundreds of micro-decisions that determine how each finished piece looks and feels.
More Than a Job
Fair pay matters, but our artisans will tell you that the work means more than the income. It is a source of pride, identity, and connection. When a customer in Brighton wears a cardigan made by a woman in Turkey, a quiet bridge is built between two cultures, two lives, two stories.
We pay above market rates and always on time. But we also ensure that every maker knows where her work ends up, who wears it, and how much it is appreciated.
How Your Purchase Makes a Difference
When you buy from Ana Chic, your money does not disappear into a supply chain. It goes directly to the woman who made your piece. It supports her household, her independence, and her craft.
Every vest, every cardigan, every bag carries hours of skilled, patient work. It carries a tradition. It carries a story.
