Brighton has always been a city that champions the independent, the handmade, and the unconventional. Walk through the North Laine or wander down the narrow paths of The Lanes, and you will find a concentration of independent shops that you simply will not encounter anywhere else in the country.
This summer, we are celebrating five of our favourite independents -- shops that share our passion for craftsmanship, sustainability, and community. Whether you are a local looking for something new or a visitor exploring Brighton for the first time, these are the places worth seeking out.
1. Ana Chic -- Handmade Ethical Fashion
Where: 21A Prince Albert Street, North Laine, BN1 1HF
We will start with our own little corner of Brighton. Ana Chic is a handmade fashion shop specialising in crochet and knitted garments, bags, hats, and accessories. Every piece in the shop is made by hand by women artisans in Turkey using organic cotton, chunky wool, and merino-alpaca blends.
What makes the shop special is that almost everything is one of a kind. We work in small batches, often producing just a single piece of each design. When it is gone, it is gone. This means every visit to the shop reveals something new.
The shop itself is intimate -- just 11 square metres -- but it is packed with colour, texture, and personality. Pop in to browse our best sellers or simply to feel the quality of handmade organic cotton in your hands. You can also find us online if you want to browse before you visit our store page for directions and opening hours.
2. Cobalt Ceramics Studio -- Handmade Pottery and Workshops
Where: North Laine area
Tucked away on a quiet side street in North Laine, Cobalt Ceramics Studio is both a working pottery studio and a retail space. The shelves are lined with mugs, bowls, vases, and planters, all thrown and glazed on site by a small team of local ceramicists.
What we love about Cobalt is their commitment to the handmade process. Nothing is mass-produced. Each piece carries the subtle imperfections that mark it as genuinely hand-thrown -- a slightly uneven rim, a glaze that pools uniquely in the firing. These are the details that make handmade objects beautiful.
They also run pottery workshops throughout the summer, which make for a brilliant afternoon activity. Book in advance, as they tend to fill up quickly during the holiday season.
3. The Green Refill -- Zero-Waste Household Store
Where: The Lanes area
If you are trying to reduce your household waste, The Green Refill is the kind of shop that makes the transition feel achievable rather than overwhelming. They stock everything from refillable cleaning products and shampoo bars to beeswax wraps and bamboo toothbrushes.
The shop operates on a simple refill model: bring your own containers, fill them from large dispensers, and pay by weight. It is satisfying, practical, and genuinely cheaper than buying single-use packaged alternatives over time.
What sets The Green Refill apart from larger eco stores is the personal service. The staff are knowledgeable without being preachy, and they are always happy to help newcomers work out what they need. It is the kind of shop that makes you feel good about your choices without making you feel guilty about the ones you have not made yet.
4. Chapter and Verse -- Independent Bookshop
Where: North Laine area
Brighton has no shortage of bookshops, but Chapter and Verse occupies a special place. It is small, carefully curated, and run by someone who clearly reads every book on the shelves. The selection leans towards literary fiction, poetry, nature writing, and independent publishers -- the kind of titles you will not find prominently displayed in chain bookshops.
The shop also hosts regular reading events and book clubs, creating a genuine community around the written word. In summer, they set up a small outdoor display that is perfect for browsing on a sunny afternoon.
If you are looking for a thoughtful gift or simply want a recommendation from someone who genuinely loves books, this is your shop.
5. Salvage and Stitch -- Vintage Clothing and Textiles
Where: The Lanes area
Salvage and Stitch brings together the best of vintage fashion with a commitment to extending the life of beautiful garments. The owner has an exceptional eye for quality, sourcing pieces from across Europe that span decades of fashion history.
What makes this shop particularly interesting is the repair and alteration service. They do not just sell vintage clothing; they restore it. Hems are repaired, buttons are replaced, and garments are altered to fit modern bodies. It is sustainable fashion in its purest form -- giving existing clothes a second life rather than producing new ones.
The shop is a wonderful complement to Ana Chic. While we create new garments using traditional techniques and sustainable materials, Salvage and Stitch preserves the craftsmanship of the past. Both approaches share a belief that clothing should be made to last and valued accordingly.
Supporting Independent Brighton
Every time you choose to shop at an independent store rather than a chain, you are making a small but meaningful decision. You are supporting a real person, keeping money in the local economy, and helping to preserve the character that makes Brighton unlike any other city in England.
This summer, take an afternoon to wander through North Laine and The Lanes. Step into the shops that catch your eye. Talk to the people behind the counters. You will discover things you never knew you wanted, and you will leave with something that carries a story.
We will be here at 21A Prince Albert Street, ready to welcome you.
